By: Henry T. Iglehart

Recently I went to see Rick Perry, the Governor of Texas and former presidential candidate, speak on American University’s campus. When I arrived all seemed, well, pleasant until I heard someone blaring “Amazing Grace” over a sound system; my friend and I turned towards the noise to see a group of people, dressed in all black, walking across the street, carrying a cardboard coffin. It was American University’s version of Occupy.

These activists had come to protest what they call Rick Perry’s policy of mass execution. Their funeral procession continued past Katzen Arts center, where Governor Perry was speaking, and onto their campus’s quad. They stopped there and did a mic-check stating that Rick Perry is a racist because’s he’s “killed” (legally executed) 234 people. (what sound leftist reasoning). They returned to Katzen and laid flowers at the foot of their coffin.

However the protest descended into chaos as Governor Perry left the theater all chaos ensued; the protestors broke the police line and tried to mob the doors and plaster them with fliers(they of course claimed this as free speech). Though driven back by the police they also attempted to mob the attendees of the speech when we left the building.

This should raise several questions in the mind of any responsible American. First why are leftist protestors getting passes from the cops? and in general why have elected officials allow this growing revolt against law and order and American values to go on so long? The most disturbing part of this protest was that these occupiers were allowed to break the police line(which is a crime in D.C.) and go unpunished. We are a nation of laws and if all citizens are not held to them we cannot function as a civilized society. These students should have had an example set for them; you break the law, you go to jail. There is no reason to allow disrespect for the law and the officers of it. In many of his writings John Locke state’s that the rule of law cannot exist unless it is applied to all, that includes hippies and marxists (even if they don’t recognize he law as legitimate).

Some may remember last October, when the Americans For Prosperity conference was taking place, the protestors all but stormed the convention center nearly trampling an old woman and causing mass chaos. Then out in Oakland you have fanatics burning flags, smashing windows and trashing a city hall. This is not what the rule of law looks like. Slowly, but surely this country is descending into chaos as “communes” spread like a virus through our parks. These radicals are slowly chipping away the rule of the law.

Photo credit: AP Photo | Occupy Oakland protestors burn an American flag found inside Oakland City Hall during an Occupy Oakland protest on the steps of City Hall. (Jan. 28, 2012)

Yet despair not my fellow Americans there is a solution, enforcing the law. If these people don’t have a permit, lock them away. Time, place and manner restraints on free speech exist for this very reason. If they are marching and harming the public good(that of us getting to work) send in the police and clampdown on these protestors. The general welfare and functioning of the public must be protected from the revolutionary dreams of marxists and anarchists.

We mustn’t let these criminals(yes criminals, they have broken laws) go free. This is after all a nation of laws. We must use the police to enforce these to a tee. Drive these un-American criminals out of street, if they cannot abide by the laws they have forfeited their ability to protest. If they wish to protest policy they must have a government approved permit to march on that day.

Yet one of the big problems remains, these radicals will still hold marches on work days and disrupt the normal flow of business. The solution to this is limiting protest and march permits to the weekends and strictly enforcing these regulations. These will still allow radicals to show their displeasure with perceived injustices and at the same time ensure security for other Americans. This ensures our the daily functions of banks and other business will not be disrupted by these protestors. Such disruptions must be safeguarded against as the disruption of business creates an unhealthy culture which vilifies hard working businessmen and bankers.

Finally precautions must be taken to ensure violent protests, such as the event in Oakland and here, are prevented. That means the cops need to start monitoring these revolutionaries. The PATRIOT ACT exists for a reason. Domestic threats need to be monitored, we must take all precautions necessary to protect against anarchy from ever occurring on our streets. These protestors have proven to be a threat to security, which makes it legal to monitor them. We must show them law abiding citizens will not be bullied.

The time has come to restore law and order to this country. We must do so by driving these radicals and their illegal protests from the street. This has worked both in Wall Street and here in Washington D.C.; it has freed our streets from chaos and allowed the American people to go about their business.

If we wish to be a nation of laws we must crackdown on this anarchy in the streets. We need to return to the rule of law, especially when it comes to protest. Even if that means with a pair of handcuffs and people behind bars. To quote Ronald Reagan on dealing with protestors, “lets get it over, no more appeasement!”
